Cozi vs Our Family Habits: a great calendar isn't a habit system

Cozi runs your family's schedule beautifully. But if you came looking for chores that stick and a reward loop kids actually chase, you've hit Cozi's edge. Here's the honest comparison — and why many families end up running both.

By Jon Horton ·

If you're comparing Cozi and Our Family Habits, you're probably one of two people. Either your family's pain is logistics — who's getting picked up when, what's for dinner, whose game is Saturday — or it's habits — the chores that don't happen without nagging, the routines that dissolve by week three, the reward chart that died on the fridge.

That distinction is the whole answer. Cozi and Our Family Habits look like rivals because they both live on the kitchen tablet and both say "family" on the box. They're not. They're built for two different jobs, and the fastest way to waste a month is to pick the one that solves the problem you don't have.

Here's the short version, then the detail.

The quick verdict

  • Pick Cozi if your real problem is the shared calendar, meal planning, and grocery lists — coordinating a busy household, especially with older kids and teens whose schedules collide. Cozi is the best mass-market family organizer there is.
  • Pick Our Family Habits if your real problem is getting habits and chores to actually stick — daily actions kids tap off, a parent check so points stay honest, and rewards kids chase. That's a different machine, and it's the one we build.
  • Run both if you have the classic two-pronged household: Cozi holds the schedule, Our Family Habits runs the action → points → reward loop. They don't overlap, so they don't fight.

What Cozi genuinely gets right

Let's not pretend otherwise — Cozi has earned its install base. It's been around for well over a decade, the free tier is generous, and the shared color-coded calendar is the best on any family app, full stop. Co-parents see the same schedule, the grocery list syncs to whoever's at the store, the meal planner is right there. If "we keep double-booking Saturday" is the sentence that describes your house, Cozi solves it and Our Family Habits won't.

So this isn't a takedown. It's a boundary.

Where Cozi leaves a gap — and why you may have ended up here

Cozi has a to-do feature, and on paper that looks like chore tracking. In practice, the moment you want chores and routines to actually change behavior, you run into Cozi's edge fast:

  • No real reward loop. A checkbox that goes away when ticked doesn't build anything. Kids need to see effort turning into something they want. Cozi has no points, no rewards economy, no running tally a kid can watch climb.
  • No parent verification. Anyone can tick anything. There's no "Mom or Dad confirmed this got done" step — so the list drifts into fiction, and you're back to refereeing.
  • No kiosk for the family tablet. Cozi assumes everyone's on their own device. Most families with younger kids run one tablet on the counter; without a kiosk mode, little kids can't log themselves with a tap.
  • Habits are a bolt-on, not the point. That's not a flaw in Cozi — it's a product decision. Cozi chose calendar-first. But it means searches like "Cozi chore chart" or "does Cozi have a rewards system" keep ending in mild disappointment, because the thing you're picturing was never what Cozi set out to be.

If any of those bullets is why you went looking for a Cozi alternative for chores, that's exactly the gap Our Family Habits was built to fill. We wrote about why a checkbox alone fails — and what to build instead — in why sticker charts stop working.

What Our Family Habits does that Cozi doesn't

Our Family Habits is habit-first, not calendar-first. A parent sets the daily actions that matter — practice, reading, bed made, kindness to a sibling. Kids tap them off on a shared tablet in kiosk mode. A parent approval queue keeps the points honest, so nobody awards themselves fifty points for "read for an hour." Earned points roll into rewards the kid actually wants — screen time, an outing, a small allowance. A weekly digest tells you what's holding and what's slipping.

What we don't do is a calendar, a grocery list, or meal planning. On purpose. We'd rather do one thing — the habit loop — properly than be a worse Cozi at logistics.

The honest recommendation

Most families shopping this comparison don't actually have to choose:

  • Calendar is the pain, habits are fine? Cozi. You're done. Don't add a second app you don't need.
  • Habits and chores are the pain, calendar's handled? Our Family Habits. Cozi's to-do list won't move the needle on behavior.
  • Both are a mess? Run Cozi for the schedule and Our Family Habits for the habit loop. They sit side by side on the same tablet and never step on each other. That's the setup we see work most often in busy, multi-kid homes — and our 10-minute kiosk guide covers getting the Our Family Habits half onto a spare tablet.

If you want the wider field — Joon, OurHome, Habitica, FamiLAMI and the rest stacked against each other — we tested all of them in the 8 best family habit tracking apps. Cozi shows up there too, in the same honest spot: a superb organizer that was never trying to be a habit tracker. If OurHome specifically is the other app on your shortlist, we go deeper on that comparison in OurHome alternatives.
